Camp Setup Instructions

A downloadable and printable version of these instructions, with a campsite diagram, can be found here.

The activities at the Jamboree open from 12:30 on arrival day.  In order to maximize the scouts’ time to enjoy the activities, camp setup should be done efficiently (and only once).  Campsites are inspected by the National Jamboree Commissioners and if a site is poorly setup, we can be asked to do it agin.  Troop 138 will not have any problems though because we will follow our plan, just as we practiced it.

Stage 1 – Immediate Arrival (10 minutes)

SPL & PL with advice of ASM2 decide on any changes to the site layout which are necessary given the elevation changes, any obstacles & size of final site.

SPL & PL’s take to the site with them

  • 4 x Neon Green Paracord cut to lengths
  • 4 x Neon Orange Paracord cut to lengths
  • 21 x Ground cloths for each tent
  • 84 x stakes for ground cloths
  • Boundary Stakes
  • Boundary Rope
  • Hazard Tape (for marking boundary rope as needed)

ASPL & QM begin to unload gear from the equipment trailer into patrol & troop piles just outside of the camp boundary and to the left side of the gateway, the area marked “Troop & Patrol Gear”.

APL’s lead the troop in taking all duffels, day packs and other equipment off the bus.  Personal Gear should be grouped by patrols in the area marked Personal Gear.  APL’s are to ensure that the bus is fully cleaned and cleared of all equipment before moving the troop off the bus.

Stage 2 – Layout setup (45 minutes)

Scribe + APL’s put up boundary rope.  Ensure that hazard tape is used to flag the boundary as needed.

QM & ASPL lead rest of troop in unloading all gear together with the Patrol QMs (M. Cozzone, D. Matthews, J. Watson & H. Marcoux-Beatty) sorting the gear into piles by patrols, scoutmasters, or in a gateway pile

Patrol Leaders and 1 scout from each patrol (F. Relander, D. Matzke, B. Stocker & C. Matthews) set out layout of site using the measuring ropes as follows:

1)      The distance from the boundary to the back near corner of the ground cloth of the tent should be length of the Neon Green ropes up to the knot.

2)      The distance between two the back corners of two ground cloths (not in the corner) should be length of the Neon Orange ropes up to the knot.

3)      The distance between two the back corner of a Four Musketeer ground cloth and the back corner of the neighbouring ground cloth should be the full length of the Neon Orange ropes.

4)      The back edge of all ground cloths should be 2 feet from the boundary to allow for guidelines to be staked in.

Once the distances are checked, the PL and his Patrol Member (F. Relander, D. Matzke, B. Stocker & C. Matthews) stake down the ground cloth for the tent in the location that the tent will be pitched.  The bags for the ground cloth should be staked in one of the corners to prevent it being lost or blown away.

In addition to the tents for their patrols, PL and his Patrol Member (F. Relander, D. Matzke, B. Stocker & C. Matthews) have additional ground cloths to place as follows:

  • Ice Wolves – SPL & ASPL tent
  • Sharp Shooters – ASM2 tent & SM tent
  • Red Bulls – ASM1 & ASM3 tent
  • Iron Falcons – Scribe & QM tent

SPL checks the layout is correct and confirms OK to proceed to next stage.

Stage 3 – Tent setup (15 minutes)

Each tenting pair pitch tents & stow personal duffels in tent (NO unpacking).  Tenting pairs must remember to put all bags, including the ground cloth bag, into the tent for safe keeping during the Jamboree.

First scouts to complete their tent to setup SM’s tent, setup gear storage tent and .

SPL to confirm Tents are setup before progressing to next stage.

Stage 4 – dining fly setup (15 minutes)

Patrols setup patrol dining flys

Big four setup HQ fly

If a patrol finishes before the other patrols, they should attempt to help the other patrols of the Four Musketeers.

SPL confirms stage completed before next stage commences.  ASM’s circulate making sure mistakes do not happen and check for changes in plan.

SPL confirms stage completed before next stage commences.
